Dewey Beach DE

Just a fifteen minute jog south of Rehoboth Beach on Rehoboth Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Dewey Beach is one mile of beach front and 3 blocks of shops, cottages and activities.  Dewey Beach’s reputation as a wild party town brings visitors in spring and summer from Washington, DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Wilmington.  At the same time, Dewey Beach manages to attract families largely because of its wide golden sand beaches.

Dewey Beach’s businesses are mainly bars and nightspots.  Pedestrians visiting these bars at all legal hours in Delaware from earliest morning till closing time often block traffic for miles.

There are not a great many formal events planned at Dewey Beach.  In September is the Dewey Beach Music Conference with hundreds of unsigned bands from throughout the United States and Canada participating.  In October, another annual event is the Greyhounds Reach the Beach gathering.  Thousands of rescued greyhounds and their owners congregate on the beach.

The nightlife is why people come to Dewey Beach.  There are numerous bars lining the beaches.  For example, The Starboard was rated by Men’s Journal Magazine as one of the best 25 bars in the United States.  Here you can fix your own Bloody Mary from over 700 items and 18 kinds of vodka.  The Starboard has its own disc jockey with live music weekends in spring and summer. Friends of The Starboard even have a countdown party to get together before the opening each spring and celebrate.  The Starboard has its own online store, including such things as T-shirts, hats and Bloody Mary mix.

The first Delaware brewpub is The Dogfish Brewery.  It features homebrewed ale and decorator spirits along with live music and a disc jockey to keep the party going. The owner has successfully entered several of his brews in national competitions and done well. Significant expansion is planned for the Dogfish, including larger brewing capacity and a full-service restaurant to add to the pub entries already available.

On the family side of activities, you can sign up for a week of sailing lessons on Rehoboth Bay.  If you would prefer, rentals of powerboats, wave runners and kayaks are also available.  The coastal eco-tour is a fascinating chance for young people to view the animal and plant life of the beachfront from the water side. A favorite for children and families is Jungle Jim’s Waterpark. Jungle Jim welcomes families and groups or mini-golf, batting cages, bumper cars, and a water park.  Some of the waterpark activities include the wave pool, several water slides, a rope climb and lazy river.

Several quality golf courses are available within a fifteen mile radius of Dewey Beach.

Your lodging is full choice.  You can rent beach houses by the weekend or week.  Cottages and condos are available beach front or beach view, and of course there are hotels and motels both in Dewey Beach and at nearby Rehoboth. The only caution is to be sure to reserve your rentals early as space goes fast.

Family dining is available at one of the many fine restaurants in the area, or the usual fast food places.
