North of the popular Jacksonville Beach is a small beach community known as Mayport. This neighborhood is a quaint area that is mostly parks, a huge Naval station, and tiny suburbs. Still, if you are in the area, you should never miss out on fun activities in Mayport.
Mayport is a historic area, one of the famous destinations of the world-class Jacksonville Beaches in Northeast Florida. Because of its strategic location, with the St. John’s River, it became the home of the Mayport Naval Station. Today, thousands of visitors come to the area to visit this little neighborhood.
Attractions In Mayport Beach
Just along the only private road in the neighborhood which connects Mayport to Ft.George Island are a variety of restaurants, shops, and boutiques. You can easily go around the neighborhood on foot or car.
• St John Rivers Lighthouse – this is a decommissioned lighthouse in 1929 and it was replaced with a lightship. This lighthouse formerly marked the mouth of the river. Today, this lighthouse is located on the grounds of the Mayport Naval Station. It is also popularly known as the Old St. John Rivers Lighthouse. If you will not be allowed to see the old lighthouse up close since it is a military facility, you can enjoy a ride on the St. John River’s Ferry from where you can see the lighthouse from the water.
• Mayport Naval Station – This is a major US Navy Base that is based in Jacksonville, Florida. It is home to a protected harbor area which accommodates carrier size sea vessels it also has an air facility. Although typically not open to the public, you may be able to glimpse some of the world’s most powerful sea military vessels when in the area.
• Cummer Art Galleries – Located along the banks of St. John River’s is the Cummers Museum and Gardens. It offers a unique perspective of the iconic river, as well as, a beautiful historical garden.
• Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park – One thing you shouldn’t miss out is the opportunity to explore the Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park. This is a 1.5-mile public beach park which features off-road bicycle trails that range from easy to hard. Many riders come to this park to experience the difficult trails aptly named Misery, Grunt, and Tornado Alley. Also in Hanna Park are campgrounds nestled along the winding wood roads where you can pitch your tent or park your RV. You will also have access to a freshwater lake where you can enjoy hike trails, picnics, water activities, and playgrounds. Finally, for special events, you can rent out the Dolphin Plaza, a beachfront facility that caters to group reservations.
How To Get There
Mayport is about 30 minutes away from the downtown area of Jacksonville Florida. If you are driving into Florida from the north, you should take 1-95 South and exit at State Road 9-A to Jacksonville. If you are coming from south of JAX, take I-95 and exit at Heckscher Drive, pass the Jacksonville Zoo. Finally, from the west, Take I-10 East towards JAX, then take I-295 North and Exit #395.
From downtown, take the Mathews Bridge to Arlington Expressway east until you reach A1A where you can turn right towards Mayport.
