Jekyll Island off the coast of Georgia on the east coast beaches USA has a history going back to the 1700’s. Originally a cotton plantation, it was recreated as a resort for the rich and famous, mostly bankers and government leaders. A limited size private membership club first focused on activities such as hunting. A gamekeeper kept the property stocked for the members with pheasants, quail, turkey and deer. The private club never really flourished and after the start of World War II, and by 1947, the State of Georgia had purchased the island with plans to set it up as a state park. In 1950 the governing structure was revised and established under the organization which is still holds today.
The Jekyll Island Authority has provided many opportunities on the island for visitors. These include a convention center, miles of beautiful beaches, golf courses, soccer fields, bicycling trails and a National Historic Landmark site. In addition, by law, 65 percent of the island must remain in its undeveloped state.
Jekyll Island has been rated as one of the top 500 resorts world wide. The ambience of the Jekyll Island Hotel’s Victorian elegance is one reason for its popularity. A popular site for weddings and meetings, the structure has been completely restored to its original elegance. The nearby golf course and bicycling paths through the maritime forests on the island provides plenty of activity. If you prefer, you can explore the historic village which recreates life at the turn of the century. There are dolphin cruises and carriage rides plus 9 miles of unspoiled beaches to explore.
Specialized tours of the historic district of the island include Pirate and Plantations, Great Women of Jekyll Island and Folklore, Rumor and Myth. The museum contains historical exhibits and artifacts from centuries of life on the island, from its slaveholding plantation days to Sea Turtle refuge and hospital.
Horseback riding is another activity that’s easy to do at the Jekyll Island Hotel. These are guided trail rides through some of the beautiful and historic areas of the island.
This is just one of the lodging choices available on Jekyll Island. Other resorts include Villas by the Sea and Jekyll Oceanfront Resort.
