  • Butler Beach is a small community located right on Anastasia Island. This is a barrier island off the east coast of Florida, providing excellent cover for the historical city of St. Augustine. Along with the other beaches in the island, Butler Beach is no stranger to amazing history.
Starting from Spanish colonizers who built a settlement in the area, Butler Beach is part of the historical St. Augustine historical area. It was named after Frank B. Butler, a local African-American resident, and businessman who played a significant role in the civil rights struggle in the 1960s. During those troubled times, while there was de-segregation, the practice remained with other beaches like St. Augustine Beach and Crescent Beach having “white only” patrons and Butler Beach is where blacks were permitted. In 1964, a violent confrontation erupted in the adjacent St. Augustine Beach which lead to several arrests. Many of the movements were influenced by then prominent Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, Butler Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area with an amazing shoreline and scenic coastal road (A1A).
