  • Anna Maria is a small city that is located on an island with the same name. The island is nestled on the western coast of Bradenton and Southwest of Tampa. The island is popular throughout the United States for having beautiful beaches. Anyone who wishes to come to Florida must consider visiting this amazing island where you can be a stone’s throw away from famous theme parks and beautiful white sand beaches.

    The Island

    Anna Maria is ideally located about an hour away from the big metropolitan city of Tampa – St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Many residents from the metro take a day tour to the island enjoying various attractions and activities. There are several beaches in the island which is not necessarily within the boundaries of the town of Anna Maria. For example, Holmes Beach is a separate town, as well as, Bradenton Beach.

    Still, because the island is only about 7 miles long, it is not impossible to enjoy exploring the other beaches and the activities that it offers. Strict regulations provide protection for the island as no tall buildings or structures are allowed to be constructed here giving visitors a chance to enjoy raw nature and beautiful natural scenery. The whole island is covered on all sides by soft sugar-white beaches where loggerhead turtles naturally nest. It also has a beautiful emerald water where manatees and dolphins thrive.

    Anna Maria is named after the wife and sister-in-law of a Former Tampa Mayor in early parts of the 20th century.

    The Town

    The town of Anna Maria is small with only about 2000, residents all year round. It is located at the northern tip of the island bounded by Holmes Beach directly to the south.

    Attractions and Activities in Anna Maria

    Enjoy the Sun – One of the most popular attractions is during dusk when the sun is just about to set. Florida’s Gulf coast is popular for its beautiful orange-hue sunsets. If you love the water and the sun, you will definitely get it from this town which enjoys plenty of sunny days all year long.

    Bean Point – There are so many great beaches on the island that you may not be able to complete them all in one day! One of the interesting areas to visit is Bean Point, this is located on the northern tip of the island. It offers great spots to swimming, wade in the water, collect shells, fish, try water sports, and simply relax.

    Coquina Baywalk – This is a small nature park allows you to enjoy the best that the island has to offer. You can walk and enjoy the sea breeze while following the trails. Trails are nicely tucked in between large areas of mangroves giving tourists a chance to have fun while navigating the trails.

    Anna Maria Historical Museum – The museum is small but it includes hundreds of important artifacts and exhibits about the history of the island. If you love history, this is a nice short stopover when on the island.

    Getting There

    To access Anna Maria Island from the city of Bradenton, you need to cross the bridges on Cortez Road or Manatee Avenue. The town and island are served by the Sarasota International Airport which caters to daily domestic and international flights.
